We affirm the value of every child, and thus the dignity of every human being,
by the manner in which we prepare our children for full participation in the cultural, economic, political,
and social responsibilities of the communities in which we live.
Harmony Education Center is proud to announce the establishment of The Meier Institute.
Few individuals have contributed more to the dialog about our education system
than Deborah Meier. Often considered the founder of the Small Schools Movement,
she has been one of the most important voices in US educational thought for the past
thirty five years. Now Harmony Education Center is joining with her to found
the Meier Institute, an organization dedicated to the preservation of her legacy
and to continuing her fight for social justice, equity, and democracy in our schools.
The Institute is headquartered at Harmony Education Center in Bloomington, Indiana, in
close proximity to the Indiana University School of Education and Lilly Library,
which now houses the Meier Archives. The Institute will devote its work to
promoting and expanding Deborah Meier's educational ideas, as embodied in her
speeches, writings, and her work at the Central Park East Elementary and Secondary
Schools in NYC and Boston's Mission Hill School.
